IP65, heat, behind the backrest or under the bench structures – how to do indirect light in a sauna correctly.
Special requirements of a sauna
A sauna is technically the most demanding room for LED lighting. In the hot room the temperature can rise to 80-110 °C when water is thrown on the stove, and the humidity stress is constant. The wrong product fails quickly or becomes a fire safety risk.
IP44 is enough for a bathroom, but the sauna hot room needs IP65 or better. In addition, cables, connectors and the driver must be placed outside the sauna or in a protective enclosure in the changing room.
Three placement options in the hot room
1. Behind the backrest – the most popular and safest
Sauna lighting behind the backrest – IP65 profile, light up along the benches
The LED strip in a profile is fixed to the back of the backrest, with the light directed up towards the benches or along the wall. The temperature behind the backrest is clearly lower than in a bench installation. The profile protects the strip from mechanical stress.
- Power: 3-7 W/m (no more is needed for mood light)
- IP rating: IP65
- Colour temperature: 2700 K (timber surfaces warm the tone)
- Driver: outside the sauna or in the changing room
2. Under the bench structures
Light via the floor or from under the lower benches. Suits wet rooms if the strip is IP65 and protected from direct water.
3. Ceiling edge (washroom / changing room)
For the washroom the same solution as for the bathroom: IP44 strip, basic profile, light reflected off the wall or ceiling.
Not recommended at the ceiling edge of the hot room – the heat of the steam directly on the strip is harmful.

Frequently asked questions
Can an LED strip be installed in a sauna?
Yes, but only under the benches or behind the backrest where the temperature stays below 60 °C. The strip must not be installed at the ceiling edge or near the stove. IP65 is a requirement.
How much heat can an LED strip take in a sauna?
A normal strip withstands about 60 °C continuously. Under the benches the temperature is 40-60 °C when it is 80 °C on the benches. Above the stove the heat rises above 100 °C – the strip is not installed there.
Which LED strip for a sauna?
A low-power 3.6 W/m is enough and produces less heat. IP65 essential. LedStore recommends the SOLO TUNNELMA 3.6 W/m strip specifically for saunas, plinths and stairs.
Where is a sauna LED strip installed?
Under the front edge of the benches or behind the backrest. The light is aimed down or at the wall, never into the eyes. The strip stays completely invisible and lights the floor and the wall.
Which colour temperature for a sauna?
2700 K or warmer. The sauna is the only room where even 2200 K works – it resembles candlelight and is calming. Cool light feels clinical in a sauna.
