Structure A – basic, light along the wall

Basic indirect lighting structure - cross-section with dimensions, light along the wall to the ceiling

The outermost batten is moved away from the wall, and the light rises along the wall to the ceiling. The most popular and simplest structure.

Corner profile at the ceiling line. Profile at a 45 degree angle in the inner corner of the bulkhead. The framing needs about 100 mm, i.e. two 48 mm battens, and the driver fits in the same bulkhead. The light leaves at an angle towards the ceiling, so no sharp line forms at the top of the wall.

Low Z-profile, 15 mm light slot. Total depth 68 mm, profile 42 mm and light slot only 15 mm. The deciding detail: with 22 mm framing the driver does not fit in the bulkhead and goes to another room or on top of a cabinet.

Ceiling · recessed - recessed into the ceiling, 24 mm opening — **Recessed into the ceiling, 24 mm opening.** The profile is recessed into the ceiling surface next to the wall. Depth 34 mm, but the top can be cut off – then 16 mm and 22 mm framing are enough.

Ceiling · narrow - recessed into the ceiling, 21 mm opening — **Recessed into the ceiling, 21 mm opening.** A narrower version: opening 21 mm and depth 43 mm, 19 mm when cut. The narrow opening restricts the beam more sharply, so the light hits the ceiling closer to the wall.

Surface profile, light to the ceiling. No building work: a mounting plate is screwed to the finished surface and the profile clips onto it. The cable runs in a surface-mounted duct to the driver.

Retrofit · two-way - light both up and down — **Light both up and down.** The same surface mounting, but the profile holds two strips. Two light levels from one structure – but also double the power, so the driver is sized accordingly.

Wall mounting · serviceable - removable front cover — **Removable front cover.** The front cover slides off, so the strip can be replaced without removing the profile from the wall. In other structures, replacement means demolition and paint repairs.

Light cove · curved - curved light slot, 55 × 53 mm — **Curved light slot, 55 × 53 mm.** The curved inner surface spreads the light evenly onto the wall and leaves no sharp edge. The driver fits in the same bulkhead behind an access hatch.

Skirting profile, 69 mm. A profile recessed behind the plasterboard that washes the floor with light. Mounting height 100-300 mm above the floor.

Structure B – light and curtain track

Curtains need about 100 mm of extra space. The light is kept on the room side so that light also comes in with the curtains closed.

Structure C – driver on a shelf

The driver sits on the shelf with the profile. Minimum size: 60 mm wide, 57 mm high opening. No access hatch needed – the driver is directly at hand.

Structure D – light towards the middle of the room

Indirect lighting inner perimeter - light towards the middle of the room, two-way dropped ceiling

The light runs around the whole room and lights the central area of the ceiling. Minimum width 90 mm, recommended 200-300 mm.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get construction details for indirect lighting?

This page has cross-sections of the most common structures with dimensions. The drawings can be given as they are to a contractor or building company as work instructions.

What dimensions should a construction detail include?

Bulkhead depth, light slot width, glare shield height, profile position and distance from the wall. These five dimensions are enough for the structure to be built correctly.

Can the construction details be used for tender calculations?

Yes. The drawings include dimensions and materials, so quantities can be taken from them. An electrical plan is still needed separately.
